Japanese towels frequently use tighter, more precise weaving and carefully controlled yarn quality, which can create loops that grab water efficiently. Some styles are engineered to feel lighter but still take in a lot of moisture, so they can outperform a “standard” towel that’s bulky but less efficient at wicking.

Standard cotton towels vary widely—everything from thin, low-loop towels to dense spa-style terry.
